Kanotix is a community based Linux/GNU distribution started by Jorg Schirottke, otherwise known as Kano. It is based on Debian Stable called "Etch" with backports to more recent applications than are available in Etch, some of which are even more recent than those in Debian Unstable (Also called Sid).
It is released as a live-cd with some of the best hardware detection in the business. It can also be installed to the hard drive to create a very stable and easy to use debian system.
